TITLE: Deputy Head Veterinary Nurse
– Guildford
SUMMARY OF ROLE
This is a key role, assisting the Head Nurse in
providing strong leadership to the Nursing and Auxiliary teams.
Acts as a role model to all clinical staff,
demonstrating clinical and leadership credibility.
Assists the Head Nurse in all aspects of the
nursing and auxiliary teams’ management to include, but not be limited to:
recruitment and selection, development, performance management, appraisal and
absence management in line with Company policy.
Mainly clinically based, supervising, educating and
mentoring all nursing and auxiliary staff, ensuring they are competent and
confident in the delivery of their duties.
Ensure a culture of high-level customer service is
instilled in all members of the nursing and auxiliary teams.
The post holder will be part of the nursing rota
covering out of hours and weekends.
Together we will demonstrate safe, clinical
decision-making and expert care together with compassionate communication for
patients referred to us. You will be care driven, have excellent communication
skills, exceptionally organised, thorough and be able to operate in a 24/7 team
environment
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional responsibilities: Maintain
professional nursing standards in accordance with the Royal College of
Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines Responsible for the supervision and
management of the nursing team in accordance with professional and RCVS
standards Manage nurses and nursing services (inc auxiliary team) by
organising the duty rota according to activity/departmental need, anticipating
when clinical activity increases/decreases, managing the forward planning of
absences and the effective use of temporary staff, ensuring the correct skill
mix is in place to deliver care. Clinically based, working alongside junior
nurses, auxiliaries and other clinical staff, ensuring the highest level of
patient care is delivered.
To provide consistent, clear, clinical and
professional leadership and act as a mentor for all staff demonstrating
professional awareness and accountability in care. Work with the Head Nurse
to ensure clinical floor efficiency and a seamless flow of patients through the
hospital. Instil an inclusive culture of teamwork across the hospital Input
into all new staff (clinical and non-clinical) induction to the hospital
Undertake clinical audits as requested by the Head Nurse, drawing up
rectification and training plans to address discrepancies. Attend patient
ward rounds and constructively contribute to enhance patient care plans Attend M & M meetings and action
improvements identified Check and close patient accounts for finance team and
in advance of patient discharge Ensure pain scores sheets and early
intervention sheets are compliant and effectively used. Work in accordance with the FR protocols
and policies. Ensure completion of CPD
log / on line tracker in accordance with RCVS requirements.
Management Responsibilities: Assist the Head
Nurse in developing and implementing a nursing strategy, reflecting the
innovative ethos of FR and the challenges nursing faces. Identify service and
policy development changes needed to ensure a continuing excellent service
level and ensure implementation Ensure
all nursing staff receive regular feedback on their performance, conducting
annual appraisals and ensuring regular follow up on objectives throughout the
year for all team members. Identify training needs of new and current team
members, proposing appropriate resources to address these training requirements
Understand and contribute to the improvement of the financial performance by
implementing any required improvements and controls Attend and in the absence
of the Head Nurse, plan, facilitate and deliver regular nurse/clinical meetings
and ensuring actions are completed in a timely manner by all team members.
Assist the Client Services Manager and Head Nurse to respond to all client
queries and complaints in a timely and efficient manner as per FR policy.
Ensuring through the Auxiliary team, effective stock management and control and
the undertaking of stock takes in accordance with FR policies. Work with the
Hospital Director and Head Nurse to ensure nursing budget is reflective of
needs and well managed. Lead by example and be instrumental in creating
excellent working relationships both internally and externally. Contribute to
plans for future growth. Support and participate in all local marketing and promotional
events Liaise and communicate with suppliers and company representatives.
Health & Safety Be aware of, and conversant
with, the Health and Safety At Work Act (1974) and comply with the regulations
set down to ensure safety to patients, staff and visitors Ensure a robust Infection Prevention and
Control policy is in place and adhered to by all staff and visitors.
