Perm Vet surgeon wanted – Full time position County DurhamPerm vet surgeon position – Level of experience negotiable, to start ASPA – Co Durham

We have a full time, permanent position for a veterinary surgeon in our mixed but mainly (92%) small animal practice. Based in a small market town in north Durham, we would be ideal for a new or inexperienced graduate, as they are never left unsupported. Backup from experienced vets is available and generously given 24/7! We would also suit a more experienced mixed vet getting tired of spending all day in the car, or of getting kicked and working in the cold, who is thinking of spending more time with small animals but wants to keep contact with the large animal side. Our new vet would need to be willing to see an occasional large animal out of hours, even if they then phoned for advice or help. Obviously, they can participate in sharing any day farm or horse visits if they wish.

We have a lot to offer :-
Rota – One in five on call with bonus scheme (percentage of work done out of hours paid monthly in arrears). Bank holidays shared, with lieu days. Usually a four day working week, with Fridays/Mondays off tied together to give a long weekend off approximately every 4-6 weeks, depending on holidays. One night per week on call, one weekend in five (Saturday/Sunday). Rota sympathetically drawn to try to suit specific requests if possible.

Usual hours 8.30 – 6.00 (6.30 if on call) Monday to Friday, Saturday mornings 8.30 – 12.00 (on a rota for two vets).

Varied interesting caseloads with a vet interested in exotics and another in acupuncture. Very few cases surgical referred, but we have good local referrals for both small and large animals if needed.
Vets able to follow their own cases, and professional development such as operating skills encouraged and supported within the practice. VN training practice with plenty of nursing staff. Nurses on call to help the vets. Well equipped, recently expanded, purpose converted comfortable building a stones’ throw from town shops. Quiet ward and waiting room. Dedicated euthanasia room. We will do home, farm and equine visits, so there is a car and a mileage allowance.

We have no accommodation, but a huge local rental market has never caused any difficulty finding local flats or houses. Local property prices very reasonable. Accommodation allowance weighted to almost cover an average local rental.

CPD encouraged and funded with allowance and time off.
Paid sick leave for 6 weeks once employed for 12 months.
4 weeks holiday + bank holidays
Professional insurance paid by the practice
Salary according to experience, but new graduates start at £31,000 including car and housing allowances. On call bonus obviously varies, but vets usually take between £ 150 and £650/month.
Workplace pension. Annual pay reviews have exceeded inflation for the last 8 years, and include an experience weighting for the first five years qualified.
